Georgia State Parks
There are a number of great state parks spread out throughout Georgia, almost all of which have trails, picnic areas, camping/RV areas, and some kind of water feature. However, the state parks are also quite diverse in terms of landscape, special attractions, and extra amenities; some might boast historic buildings and waterfalls, others golf courses and fishing lakes, others sheer cliffs and unique bridges.
I hope to eventually visit to all the state parks in Georgia (I’m just over halfway), but for now I’m concentrating on those that have lakes or rivers available to kayak on. The state park system has a list of parks designated on their ‘Paddlers Club’ challenge and it’s been good motivation to get me out to a variety of areas to explore. (They also have a similar biking and pet trails challenge list, FYI.)

State Historic Sites
Though managed by the state park system, Georgia’s designated state historic sites are separate entities when it comes to prices and passes. The list is not huge (only officially 17 at this time) but there are definitely some interesting and historically significant places to go. Of course, the list changes as new sites get added–or some move off because they were upgraded to national sites.
National Historic Sites
Speaking of which, Georgia has a good number of parks, historic sites, and special designation areas managed by the National Park Service as well. From the boyhood homes of national figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Jimmy Carter to large natural areas like the Chattahoochee basin and the start of the Appalachians to important Native American and Civil War locations, all these areas have become recognized as vital parts of America’s heritage.
