Franklin D Roosevelt State Park

Pine Mountain, GA

Georgia’s largest state park, FDR State Park is located along the Pine Mountain Range and stretches along a scenic highway going from Pine Mountain to Warm Springs. The park has many overlook points including spectacular views over the valley at the visitor center and Dowdell’s Knob. The area is named for FDR because this was the place he usually came to enjoy the nearby warm springs as a part of helping his and other patients’ polio symptoms. He even had a home built in the area where he died which is a state historic site. Around the trails is the well-known Pine Mountain Trail as well as a couple of lakes and many camping and picnic sites.

Kayaking on Lake Delano (15 acres)

While FDR is Georgia’s largest park, its main lake is actually quite small so a paddle around Lake Delano (or as it is sometimes called Lake Dealanor) is very quick. Since it is pretty much just a circle, there’s not much in the way of interesting nooks and crannies to explore. You do however get a nice view of some of the park’s cabins and campgrounds and, while I might not recommend it as a destination for kayaking in and of itself, the lake makes a nice place to have picnic snack break or rent a colorful paddle boat while out enjoying the amazing views and trails of the rest of the park.
