Named after the historical Daniel Boone who actually stayed for a bit in the town, Boone is a small mountain community in North Carolina that has become quite a significant tourist draw, from its community store fronts with antique stores and old-timey markets to its growing prominence for the local university. It’s most notably a great area to rent a cabin and stay for either the skiing season or simply a nice cool summer getaway as my family did. (2024)
A view from the house we rented up on Doe Ridge – true to the name, we saw deer out grazing almost every night (as well as groundhogs!)
A view of some of the downtown storefronts from the steps of the Jones House Cultural Center seen below
A prominent part of Boone is the Hickory Ridge History Museum which has a number of original old cabins now used to show the various stages of settler and colonial life in early North Carolina as well as a decades old outside drama called “The Horn in the West”
On the modern side, Boone’s university boasts the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts whose modern aesthetic spills out onto the streets with interesting sculptures and decorations all around.
