Just down from Biloxi, Ocean Springs is the more artsy and progressive side of the Mississippi Coast. Famous as the home of artist Walter Anderson, the town is full of galleries and art shops in addition to some historic homes. It has a very relaxed atmosphere with lots of sidewalk restaurants with nice dining . (2011, 2022, 2024)
Right at the bridge where one crosses into Ocean Springs is the city mural reflecting a bay view in the style of its famous artist Walter Anderson.
Most of Anderson’s work and life history can be found at the museum in the midst of town.

This marker notes the former location of the French Fort Maurepas which was the actual start of the town way back in 1699, now a city park space looking out over the Gulf of Mexico.
