I went to Indianapolis with a group of friends going for a national conference. While there, I had the chance to visit a bit of the downtown area and see some of the many monuments in the city as well as a bit of the signature Central Canal running through it. It also just so happened to be the weekend of the Indy 500 so there were also parades and events going on. (2022)
The impressive Sailors and Soldiers monument stands in the midst of Monument Circle and is a centerpiece and common gathering point for the city.
Some downtown buildings in Mile Square
Of course the whole city celebrates the Indy 500 including gigantic banners covering buildings around the area including the Marriot Hotel.
Buildings along the Central Canal at the entrance to White River State Park
Some unique architecture in the city like the Indiana Theater, the Artsgarden, and the World War Memorial
Interestingly, Indiana is also home to highest population of people from Burma in all of America, including the largest number of people from the ethnic groups of the Chin Hills in the southside of Indianapolis. That is why the city is often referred to even in the media as “Chindianapolis”
