Americus, GA is an old town in the middle South farming region of Georgia that was quite prominent in the late 19th century (boasting many old buildings from this era) but that went into decline. It then became most known being the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity and an association with Jimmy Carter. That said, the old downtown has undergone a large facelift in recent decades, restoring many buildings to their former glory. (2025)

The signature building of Americus is the 1892 Windsor Hotel building complex that takes up a whole city block and is full of restaurants, wineries, and more. Other old buildings surround it.

The Lee Street historic district of the city has many old homes of various types.
Interestingly, another odd claim to fame for Americus is that Charles Lindbergh launched his first solo flight from its airport.

Americus also became quite prominently know in the world of equity and social justice both for it being the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity as well as the site of the communal Koinania Farm. Not far away are the National Historic Sites of Andersonville Prison and POW museum and Jimmy Carter’s hometown of Plains.
