Kennesaw is another of those small Georgia towns famous as a Civil War battle site and has a significant national park that incorporates the strategic Kennesaw Mountain battlefield. Its small historic downtown also holds a large Southern railroad museum in no small part because Kennesaw was the starting site of the famous Great Locomotive Chase.
The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield park is a nice expanse of mountain trails and cannon placements for both history and nature lovers.
A Union tunnel that survived the war; as noted, “this tunnel was planned with a view of blowing up the Confederate works which their evacuation made unneccesary”
The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History highlights both these aspects of Kennesaw history. Most famously it holds the original steam train “The General” that was the stolen train in the Great Locomotive Chase. (The train that chased it, The Texas, is housed in the Cyclorama museum in Atlanta.)
