Alabama: State Parks & Historic Sites

Moundville Archaeological Site (Moundville/Tuscaloosa):The most historic of Alabamas’s national historic sites, Moundville is the second largest existing example of Middle Mississippian era Native mound-building (after Cahokia). Pictured here is one of its most famous artifacts, a pallette with a beautifully preserved engraving of the famous hand and eye motif of the culture.
USS Alabama (Mobile): One of only two remaining Dakota class warships, the USS Alabama is a national historic landmark that is now located in Mobile Bay and which you can visit to board and learn more about the history.
Cheaha State Park (Delta): Cheaha State Park is located at Alabama’s highest point on Cheaha Mountain and boasts a wonderful overlook and tower.
Desoto Caverns (Childersburg): Originally called Kymulga Cave, this cavern is not a state historic site but it does have a long history of use by both Native Americans, civil war soldiers, and even as a speak-easy during during prohibition. Today it and the area around have been turned into a tourist fun park.
Lakepoint State Park (Eufaula): This state park lies alongside Lake Eufaula, a huge reservoir on the Alabama/Georgia border. It has great picnic areas and lots of places to enjoy the lake and wildlife (we even saw a gator swimming in the marina). The lake itself is considered one of the best bass fishing locations in the country.
