8/1/03: “After two very long plane rides, Shari from CAL and I arrived in Nairobi. The first moment of excitement hit me when, right after the plane touched down, I saw open grass and savannah type [acacia] trees. It was just the kind of landscape I would expect.”

“The ride from the airport to the hotel was even better in making me feel like I was really in Africa—we passed through the city center which is a mix of old and new. With shack buildings just across from big towers, gas stations with hand-written ‘gas available’ signs, crazy traffic, packed public transport, and people walking along the roads on dirt paths and darting across the street–it is everything I would expect it to be.”
