When I first visited Heidelberg, it struck me as one of the nicest cities I had seen in Germany in terms of its view (the sight of the city from either side of the Neckar River is great) and the impressiveness of its castle, a large stone building of walls and towers which was largely left in ruins after attacks by the French in 1689. Inside are many interesting museums and artifacts including the huge wine vat (Großes Faß) which holds a whopping 48, 780 gallons. (2001)
