Poissy

Poissy is one of the larger towns along the Seine in the department of Yvelines. It has become an industrial hub over the decades but its old town is notable especially for the historic bridge, collegial church, some noteworthy architecture, and its connections to several ancient kings of France. (2025)

The old Eglise Collegiale of Poissy dates from its second construction in the 12th century though it had fallen into disrepair by 19th century when it was finally refurbished as an historic monument. Still, it served as an important place in the past since King Louis IX and Philip III were both born and baptized here. It is also full of many amusing gargoyles.

Part of the ancient bridge over part of the Seine, now a footpath and overlook.

The famous modern-style architect “Le Corbusier” has one of his most iconic buildings called ‘Villa Savoye’ just outside of Poissy’s city center. This fact is highlighted by the presence of his statue in the middle of town.

Another famous building in downtown Poissy is the multi-sided ‘Octroi’ or tax exchange building which would have once been the site to collect tariffs as merchants entered the commercial part of the city. Today it has a museum related to this history.

Poissy’s symbol is fittingly the “poisson” (fish) and it can be found in some unusual places, such as at the top of this town hall flagpole!
