The smaller of the three main cities in Alsace, the focus of Mulhouse is the large church and historic buildings on the central square. Much of the rest of the old city was destroyed during the World Wars and it has become an industrial hub. There are also several historic churches and museums for which it is known as well. (2025)
The central square of Mulhouse called Place de la Reunion has some of its older half-timber buildings typical of the Alsace region, other colorfully painted as well as the large ‘temple’ (Protestant church) Saint Etienne that towers over all of it.



Along the outskirts of town, Mulhouse is bounded by canals of the River Ill
The red cogwheel is a symbol of this industrial city that turns up in murals, city gates, and the large art installation seen here.
