Hamburg State Park

Mitchell, GA

Tucked away in a fairly rural part of GA with pecan farms all around, Hamburg State Park sits on a large mill pond formed by the dam and corn grist mill which sit at the edge of the park. This historic mill is a signature feature of the park and still operates as a museum giving a glimpse of the past in this area. The majority of the park is full of RV camping along the large lake shore and is apparently very popular locally. It’s also far enough south that there’s at least a chance you might get to see alligators on the shore as well. (Unfortunately, I didn’t!)

Kayaking Hamburg Mill Pond (225 acres)

Hamburg State Park was a great place for some fun kayaking. They call it a mill pond but it’s actually a good-sized lake that stretches around several corners. Not only are there stump fields all over that make it a bit of an obstacle course (especially when the wind is kicking up as it was when I was there) but the quiet back edge is entirely covered with a beautiful lily pad field.
