Darien is a small town that was one of the earliest planned towns of the state and which stood as an English stronghold against other colonial competitors, first as an outpost with the historic Fort King George and later with the garrison of Scottish soldiers who founded the town as New Inverness. Today it is a small town with some historic homes and churches and an industry of shrimp boats that go out onto the nearby Altahama river. (2021)
A fleet of shrimp boats line the channel that goes into the Altamaha River and to the nearby ocean.
The town has quite a number of historic church including the old Methodist church seen here at left and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal built by former slaves.
Darien is probably most visited now as the site of Fort King George where they have reconstructed the old 18th century fort
